The House on Mango Street
In Sandra Cisneros's novella, The House on Mango Street, a young hispanic girl named Esperanza is put in situations with people who are restrained from trying to achieve their dreams by gender, socioeconomic level and ethnicity. Esperanza learns that only she can get herself out of Mango Street and is an inspiration to women now by proving she does not need a man in her life to make her happy. I actually liked this book more than I thought I would. Even though the slower parts of the book, the plot and message stayed strong in my mind.
